21-gun salute on campus honors prisoners of war, missing in action

September 16, 2009

A 21-gun salute will be held on campus on Thursday, Sept. 17, as part of a ceremony honoring former and present military prisoners of war and soldiers missing in action. The ceremony is hosted by Arnold Air Society, a service organization within the university's Air Force ROTC program.

The program will be held at the southeast corner of Plum and Meridian. Robert Widemann, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, will provide remarks and a 21-gun salute will be provided by the F.E. Warren Air Force Base Honor Guard. The program provides Air Force ROTC students with the opportunity to remember soldiers who were prisoners or who are missing in action.

The 21-gun salute will be two burst of gunfire about 30 seconds apart. It will be held between 4:30 and 5 p.m.
