CSU celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

CSU will commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of on-campus and communitywide events through October.

“National Hispanic Heritage Month is a reminder that we need to acknowledge the contributions of Latinos every day, to celebrate the lives and generations before us,” said Guadalupe Salazar, director of El Centro.

All events are free for students, faculty, staff and community members. Many events are geared for families and children as well.

Activities for the month-long celebration include:

True Meaning of Graffiti with Metztli
4-6 p.m. Sept. 25, Lory Student Center Room 228
A presentation on the misconceptions about graffiti art.

Fundraiser for the Museo de las Tres Colonias at Bas Bleu Theatre
6-8:30 p.m. Sept. 25, Bas Bleu Theatre, 401 Pine St.
Entertainment and food will be available at the event. All proceeds will go to the Museo de las Tres Colonias.

From Sugar Beet Fields to the Field of Dreams
7-8 p.m. Sept. 26, Old Town Library, 201 Peterson St.
Local baseball historians will discuss the Spanish baseball leagues of Northern Colorado, also known as the Sugar Beet Leagues.

Exploring Heritage Study Abroad
Noon- 1p.m. Sept. 27, El Centro Office
This session serves showcase students’ study abroad options that include an opportunity to explore their personal heritage.

This event includes stories, crafts, puppets and songs in Spanish.

La Carpa Aztlan presents: "I Don't Speak English Only!"
Oct. 8
This theatre performance is hosted by Sigma Lambda Beta.

Poudre School District Students present: 2012 Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session Presentation
Noon-1 p.m. Oct. 9, Johannsen Support Services Center Boardroom
Come hear Poudre School District Latina/Latino high school students discuss their experiences at the LDZ Youth Legislative Session and their plans for the future.

Tejano Music with Audi y Zentimento
2-4 p.m. Oct. 13, Old Town Library, 201 Peterson St.
Local Tejano/Conjunto band, Audi y Zentimento, will perform at the Old Town Library to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

Celebrating the Gifts of Our Culture/Celebrando los Regalos de Nuestra Cultura
10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 13, CORE Center, 114 Bristlecone Drive
This event offers the opportunity to learn about diversity within the Hispanic culture.

November

Noche Latina: Sabor, Cultura y Musica
5-8 p.m. Nov. 4, Lory Student Center Theatre
Noche Latina highlights Latino connections to our African, Asian, Indigenous and European roots with a series of food, performances and speakers. Free to CSU students and community members.
