Memorial Day commemorates all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. Traditionally, Americans fly the flag of the United States at half mast from dawn until noon.
In observance of Memorial Day, University offices are closed and no classes will be held.
Memorial Day began in the 19th century as "Decoration Day." Citizens were urged to decorate the graves of soldiers who'd died in the Civil War.
After World War I, Decoration Day expanded to include ceremonies honoring the dead in all of America's wars.
In 1967, Decoration Day officially became Memorial Day. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Act established Memorial Day as one of three holidays (including Veterans Day and Presidents Day) to be celebrated on a Monday to create a convenient three-day weekend.
Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May.
During University holidays such as Memorial Day, parking is not enforced in Q, W, X, X/Z, and Z lots.
