Enjoy Geoff Pennington's graduate recital and CSU's Jazz Combos.
Geoff Pennington, will use his alto saxophone to perform a transcription of Cannonball Adderley’s “Autumn Leaves” solo at his graduate recital Tuesday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m.
“To play at a high level for yourself is a great feeling: It’s almost a meditative state,” Pennington says. “It’s like you watch your hands playing something really cool, and you just observe it happening. Because you’ve already spent years and years doing this, and then you just relax and let it come out.”
More than a jazz enthusiast, Pennington leads the music students of the Jazz Program at CSU as he prepares for his passions of learning, teaching and performing jazz. When the he is not in his office soloing over the sounds of the harp player in the adjacent practice room, he teaches and rehearses around the clock.
The Jazz Combos concert on Wednesday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Griffin Concert Hall at the University Center for the Arts.
The CSU Jazz Combos present a night of improvisation and small group interplay, including student compositions and arrangements. “This evening really features the creativity of the students in the CSU Jazz Program, highlighting their composing and arranging skills as well as their adept improvisations,” says Peter Sommer, director of the Jazz Program at CSU.
