Campus facilities become cash cows during summer

In recent years, empty summer campuses have been recognized as potential cash cows, and colleges and universities have tried to fill once-quiet weeks with for-credit courses, conferences, day camps, workshops, private parties, and even film shoots. That is especially true this summer.

But while colleges are be working harder to gain revenue from campuses this summer, some are running headlong into the weakened economy. For years, Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., has held or run more than 20 athletic, cultural and academic programs and camps in summer. This year, a half-dozen have folded, citing falling enrollments.
