College prep for parents

Reporter Bella English describes her experience during a recent orientation session at the university her son will attend in the fall.

With lectures from advisers, professors, deans, and students - aided by PowerPoint presentations, maps, pie charts, and brochures - parents learned all about academic advising, college transition, the health center, meal plans, career guidance, financial options, campus safety, IT issues, student life, the honor pledge, work-study, and more, in what Bella English has nicknamed, "College of Dummies."

Each parent was given a refrigerator magnet with the number for the Parent Helpline on it -- the orientation session raised her comfort level, but it also raised her anxiety level.
