Symphonic Band Concert

December 5, 2013

Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg wrote a broad, soulful piece for the funeral of a friend and fellow composer who died at 23. American composer Alfred Reed wrote 'Russian Christmas Music,' which emulates the vocals in Eastern Orthodox liturgical music. Both works will be featured in the Dec. 12 Symphonic Band concert.

Images of ice and snow

This program highlights the sounds of the far north, conjuring images of ice and snow with works from Russia, Norway, and Denmark.

In rehearsals, this program started with a “winter” theme, but the images of snow and ice that surfaced led the program down a different path.

The works are varied, but all have elements of the far north in them. Grieg’s Funeral March for Rikard Nordraak and Alfred Reed’s Russian Christmas Music help anchor this take on the winter season.
