MWC champs face Utah, BYU to close regular season

By Tony Phifer

The 14th-ranked Rams, who have wrapped up their eighth league title in 12 years, face long-time foes Utah and BYU at home in their final regular-season matches.

CSU coach Tom Hilbert has won his eighth MWC title in the league's 12-year history. The Rams close the regular season this week with home matches against Utah and BYU.

The Colorado State University Rams didn’t even have to break a sweat Saturday night to win their eighth Mountain West Conference volleyball title in the league’s 12-year existence.

Champions once again

The 14th-ranked Rams (24-3, 13-1 MWC) had clinched a tie for the league championship Thursday with a sweep of Border War rival Wyoming. They had the night off Saturday while BYU was upsetting second-place New Mexico (19-9, 11-4), giving coach Tom Hilbert back-to-back titles for the first time since 2003-04.

Utah, BYU leaving MWC

As a result, the pressure will be off this week when the Rams close the regular season with home matches against Utah (7 p.m. Wednesday) and BYU (7 p.m. Friday). With both teams leaving the MWC, these are the last scheduled matches against CSU’s long-time rivals.

Seniors will be honored

Friday night will be Senior Night as the Rams honor seniors Danielle Minch, Jacque Davisson, Emily Koenning and Audrey Hemmings. Minch and Davisson, both outside hitters and strong candidates for all-MWC honors, are among the top players in the 14-year Hilbert era.

Tickets available

Tickets for both games are available online or at the gate. The Utah game is a Pepsi 4-Pack night, with CSU offering fans four tickets, four hot dogs, and four Pepsis for $20.
