School is Cool: 22 years of helping kids

August 2, 2013

Volunteers are still needed to fill shifts this week as CSU embarks on its 22nd year of providing supply-filled backpacks for Poudre School District students.

Committee member Ann Randall is one of many longtime School is Cool volunteers.School is Cool, a unique program created and organized by CSU employees, has been using donated funds to fill backpacks for PSD students every year since 1992. From humble beginnings -- fewer than 60 backpacks were donated the first year in 1992 -- the program has provided more than 29,000 backpacks so students can start their school year on equal footing with their peers.

School is Cool expects to fill more than 2,500 backpacks this year. Each $25 donation buys and fills a backpack for students in elementary, middle and high schools throughout PSD. Major sponsors include the Bohemian Foundation, Hewlett-Packard and the CSU Bookstore. Most of the funding, however, comes from CSU employees.

Volunteer and join the fun

Volunteers are needed to fill shifts Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Duties include supply organization, backpack stuffing and backpack delivery to area schools.
