CSU to attend Colorado Brewers' Festival

June 26, 2014
By Jeff Dodge

Colorado State University will provide a side of higher education to accompany the liquid refreshments at the Colorado Brewers' Festival in downtown Fort Collins this weekend.

The 2013 Ram Patio.Among the offerings on CSU’s festive “Ram Patio” will be various resources about the university’s Fermentation Science and Technology program. The Ram Patio, which will also feature games, snacks and CSU gear giveaways, can be found in the Washington Park area of the festival, near Maple and Howes streets.

In addition to the Fermentation Science and Technology table at the patio, Jeff Callaway, the program’s director of industry outreach, will host a question-and-answer session at noon on Saturday as part of “Beer School” in The Summit beer area.

In the year-old FST degree program, students learn all about fermented products like beer, wine, cheese, bread, pickles, yogurt and sauerkraut. It blends an interdisciplinary science background with courses focused on the science, safety, culinary and nutritional attributes of fermented foods and beverages.

BBI, UCA also on tap

The Ram Patio will also have information about CSU’s Beverage Business Institute. That program, housed in the College of Business, delivers education, training and research on the business operations, production and distribution to professionals in the beverage industries, from soft drinks to beer. The Ram Patio will also feature information about the latest offerings from the University Center for the Arts.

The Ram Patio offers an oasis under a large tent in a fenced area complete with a misting fan, Adirondack chairs, tables with umbrellas, and a cornhole game. CSU representatives will be giving away peanuts, popcorn, beads, Ramhorn hats and other CSU gear that participants can win by spinning a prize wheel.

The Colorado Brewers’ Festival, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the historic downtown Civic Center area of Fort Collins. Admission is free this year, and the event will feature more than 50 of the state’s breweries and about 100 varieties of Colorado craft beer.
