Mary Ontiveros encourages campus to be engaged

September 12, 2012

In Mary Ontiveros's letter, she encourages students, faculty and staff to become engaged in issues that affect our lives and work at CSU.

Our 12th annual Diversity Symposium, “Access, Attainment, and Responsibility Diversity,” begins Sept. 18 and runs through Sept. 20. I encourage you to take advantage of this important opportunity to learn about and become engaged in issues that affect all our lives and work at Colorado State University.

The Diversity Symposium gives individuals a wonderful opportunity not only to hear about different perspectives, but to dialogue and to talk to people who are experts in these areas. The Diversity Symposium also gives individuals the chance to broaden their perspectives and ensure that people see that it is okay to have different perspectives and the symposium is a safe place in which to voice them. Hosting the Diversity Symposium, and at such a critical time of year, is the first step in helping CSU fulfill its mission statement.

This year's symposium theme, "Access, Attainment, and Responsibility”, explores the evolution of access in higher education as we recognize the 150th Anniversary of the Morrill Act (also known as the Land Grant Act).

In addition to more than 40 concurrent sessions on related topics, the symposium includes a keynote address by Sherman Alexie, author, poet, producer, screenwriter and performer.

It is my hope that all campus departments do what they can to encourage participation in this important event and to support employees and students who are interested in attending.
