James Fleming: 'Fixing the Sky'

January 21, 2009

Thursday, Jan. 22 - 4 p.m.
Clark A 104

Professor James Fleming from Colby College will give the presentation, Fixing the Sky: The checkered history of weather and climate control.

This presentation examines historical ways of thinking about weather and climate control. It includes stories from a long and checkered history.

Myth, tradition, fiction & fantasy about weather & climate control

It examines, in the context of myth, tradition, fiction, and fantasy, the proposals and actual practices of a number of dreamers, militarists, and outright charlatans, of rain kings, weather warriors, and climate engineers, both ancient and modern.

It argues for the relevance of history, the foolishness of quick fixes, and the need to follow a middle path of expedited moderation in aerial matters, seeking neither to control the sky nor diminish its importance.
