Increased postage rates effective May 11

The U.S. Postal Service will be raising postage rates effective May 11, 2009, for First-Class Mail, Standard Mail (bulk) and Special Services.

First-class letters increase to 44 cents

The price of a First-Class letter will increase 2 cents, bringing the cost to mail a one ounce letter to 44 cents. The cost of a postcard will increase to 28 cents, and one ounce flats will increase to 88 cents.

International mail rates also increase

International mail will also increase in May. One ounce airmail will increase to 75 cents for Canada, 79 cents for Mexico and 98 cents for all other countries.

Nonprofit rates

For those departments mailing at the nonprofit rates, nonprofit letters will increase by 1 cent to 17.2 cents; however, the price for nonprofit flats will decrease by 5.8 cents to 36.2 cents.

Postage rates adjusted each May

To assist you with budgeting future postage costs, the U.S. Postal Service will adjust first-class postage rates each May. Prices for Priority and Express Mail will be adjusted each January, consistent with rate adjustments for other carriers.
