Economy domiated higher ed news in 2008

The economy overshadowed just about everything else during 2008 in the world of higher education.

Colleges and universities are looking for ways to ease the crunch by expanding financial aid, offering emergency loans, or cutting salaries of top campus officials. But the tough times are just beginning.

"Colleges and universities are entering into very difficult financial times — and access and quality are likely to remain at great risk," warned Molly Corbett Broad, president of the American Council on Education, a Washington-based non-profit for higher education officials.
