Veterinary Laboratory Director Honored with National Award

Dr. Barbara Powers, director of CSU's Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories, is the 2011 recipient of the E.P. Pope Award.

Dr. Barbara PowersIt is the highest honor awarded by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians.

The E.P. Pope Award provides the highest acknowledgement to those members who have made noteworthy contributions to the AAVLD, and advanced implementation and recognition of veterinary diagnostic medicine.

Dr. Powers has dedicated her entire academic career to Colorado State University. In 1998, she was named director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories. She has dedicated herself to advancing the field of veterinary pathology through teaching, research and outreach.

“Dr. Powers has been an incredible asset to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories and to Colorado State University,” said Dr. Lance Perryman, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. “She has been tirelessly devoted to making our diagnostic laboratory one of the best in the nation, as well as providing excellent service to DLAB clients, and being a mentor to our students while maintaining her own research interests. This award is a reflection of her dedication not only to her profession, but to her students and colleagues.”

Powers is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in Anatomic Pathology. Her research interests and areas of specialty include surgical pathology, oncology, radiation pathology, orthopedic pathology and equine endometrial pathology.

Powers’ past honors include the SmithKline Beecham Research Award in 1993, CVMBS Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award in 2002 and Colorado Veterinary Medical Association Veterinarian of Year Award in 2005. She was recognized for best manuscript in the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation in 2004, served on the board of directors and was president of Colorado Veterinary Medical Association; has had more than 200 abstract presentations; published more than 175 refereed papers; and been a guest speaker across the United States and abroad. She also has served on nearly 50 graduate committees.
