Ask Cam

Rocking Hughes

April 6, 2010

"Hey Cam,

Moby Arena is an OK venue for concerts, but it outdoor concerts are so much better. How about Hughes Stadium? Have there ever been concerts there?"

Cam’s response:

OK, I have to admit that this may show a little grey in my wool, but I remember some great concerts out at Hughes Stadium. The facility was opened in 1968 and has been the host of more than a few notable acts.

According to CSU historian James Hansen, Denver-based promoter Barry Fey was instrumental in bringing many acts to Hughes. The Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson, Van Halen and Frank Zappa have all graced the stage there. Elton John had perhaps the best – if not the most memorable – entrance when he unexpectedly dropped in to join a Beach Boys and Chicago concert in 1975.

Perhaps the most famous was Bob Dylan’s performance in the 1977 Rolling Thunder Review that was filmed during a pouring rainstorm for an NBC special.

So there you have it. Concerts have been held at Hughes.

Ah, flashbacks …
