Black in Latin America

The PBS documentary, 'Black in Latin America,' takes you to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru, each of which has a secret history. Narrator/Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., examines and celebrates how Africa and Europe came together to create the rich cultures of Latin American and the Caribbean.

Evening activities

  • Screening the documentary Black in Latin America directed by Harvard professor, Dr. Gates;
  • Presentation by Dr. Valerio-Holguin on the Black farm-worker movement in the Dominican Republic;
  • Presentation and performance by professional percussionist Ben Christensen; and
  • Performance by the Afro-Puerto Rican drumming ensemble Barrio E.
