Celebrate your Ram pride during this year's Homecoming festivities

September 26, 2011

This year's Colorado State University Homecoming and Family Weekend highlights a variety of activities to keep the CSU and Fort Collins communities spirited.

The weekend kicks off with the Distinguished Alumni Awards Banquet, gathers for the annual Reunion on the Oval, strides through the town in the Parade led by Grand Marshall Joe Blake and shows off Ram pride as CSU takes on the San Jose State Spartans.  With a plethora of activities, Ram fans will surely have plenty to do.

Distinguished Alumni Awards

Seventeen notable alumni will be celebrated at this year’s Distinguished Alumni Awards Banquet, a new addition to the traditional Homecoming and Family Weekend festivities. The alumni, nominated by their peers, have distinguished themselves professionally and have made contributions to the university through their time or philanthropy. The reception will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29, at the Embassy Suites in Loveland.

Reunion on the Oval

The Reunion on the Oval will kick off the weekend’s events at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30. It serves as a gathering place for alumni, students, parents and families, and community members prior to the annual Homecoming Parade. Come enjoy carnival games and popcorn while the band Opie Gone Bad performs. The Cupcake Cruiser will also be on hand selling cupcakes. The event is free and open to the public.

Homecoming Parade

Grand Marshall Joe Blake, chancellor of the Colorado State University System, will be leading this year’s Homecoming Parade encouraging participants and the community to “Get Your Green On.” The parade will begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 at the intersection of Howes Street and Oak in downtown Fort Collins and will end at the intersection of Meridian Avenue and University Avenue. The 90-minute parade will feature CAM the Ram, the CSU Marching Band and a wide variety of student and community organizations. For registration details or a map of the parade route, visit

Pep rally and bonfire

The 90-minute parade will be followed by the annual pep rally, including the lighting of the "A," fireworks and bonfire. The Colorado State Forest Service, with the help of CSU students and CSFS volunteers, will again provide the wood for the bonfire. Like last year, the bonfire will be fueled by a combination of pine and Douglas-fir “slash” from CSFS projects that focus on removing beetle-kill trees, mitigating fire risk and improving forest health.

The use of slash is a greener alternative than burning pallets, because slash has little value in a material sense, so burning it this way is a useful way to deal with smaller sticks and branches that remain after forest management activities.

Annual 5K race

Runners will take their marks at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, to start the annual CSU Homecoming and Family Weekend 5k. The starting point will be on the university’s Oval. The 31st annual race involves a flat course throughout campus for serious and novice runners and walkers as well as a Kids Fun Run, led by Cam the Ram. The children’s run is part of the Healthy Kids Run Series sponsored by Poudre Valley Hospital’s Healthy Kids Club.

Registration is available online at the website. Registration is available for $25 until 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, when online registration closes. Race-day registration in person is available for $30. Registration includes a long-sleeved T-shirt.

Homecoming tailgate and game

Before cheering on the Rams Saturday at 2 p.m., enjoy tailgate fare, music and Ram pride at the Homecoming and Family Weekend Tailgate. Registration is required for the tailgate and includes chopped pork or pulled chicken sandwich, sides, dessert, and non-alcoholic beverage. Cash bar available. The tailgate fee is $10 for members of the Alumni Association and $15 for nonmembers.
